i think razia gave a good answer to your question...there are different types of BC pills that work differently, and not everyone reacts the same way to different kinds. the best way to get to where you can accurately predict and control when you get your period would be after being steadily treated for a few months at least (some ppl need more time, some less). however, i dont think its a bad idea. ive known several people that have done this before vacation, or hajj, or their wedding, and it has worked out well for them, alhamdulillah. as far as side effects of birth control go, they can vary a lot depending on the person and the brand you use. usually the ones with lower levels of hormones provide less chance of side effects than their counterparts that have higher levels.

i think your best bet, hamna, is to talk to a dr about it and whether or not she thinks its a good idea for you. personally, i think its cool that girls have an option to delay things a bit every once in a while, and i dont think its unhealthy to do so (in most cases). it may be a little late for you to have the desired effect this ramadan, but its still worth a shot. for a lot of people, just taking active hormone pills will delay your period until a few days after you discontinue taking them, even without beng stable on it for a few weeks/months. so bottom line...talk to your doctor asap and inshallah things will work out for you

(but also be aware that birth control does carry the risk of rare but still serious side effects for some women, and no medication is completely safe. think about the risks and benefit and decide if its worth it for you) remember that even if you cant pray or sit in the prayer hall of the masjid, you can still make lots of duaa, inshallah khair
