Their ideology is very much based on a foundation of Syed Qutb's philosophy, cranked up to a whole 'nother level.
If you've read some of Syed Qutb's work, which you probably have, you will better understand the reason for their tactics, and why we see so many bombings in places where even Muslims live (which on the face of it seems to defy all logic but makes perfect sense to their world view).
Incidentally, Syed Qutb was actually quite a good writer. A lot of his work is interesting, but although some of his writing seems quite radical, it seems to me that he was writing more to shake Muslims up and awaken them from their sleepwalking slumber. Al-Qaeda and others used his writings, ratcheted it up a whole lot, to say, "hey yeah let's blow some **** up!"
