budmano can correct me if I'm wrong but the concept of wisdom teeth causing other teeth to become crowded has fallen out of favor.

when you don't have room for your wisdom a number of things can happen..it can become impossible to properly clean the area, the wisdom tooth can negatively affect the second molar (cavitiy-wise, gum problems, etc), you can develop an infection.

I've seen the surgery done. it takes a lot less than an hour. it's like taking a nap and you won't remember anything from when you sat down to when you woke up and it was over. if you absolutely don't want to be put to sleep there are other sedation options..if you don't mind being conscious.
