Many, if not most, groom's families expect huge dowries, fancy weddings, and expensive gifts. Imagine you have 5 daughters and imagine that there are plenty of shameless families out there that will break an engagement off even on the wedding day if their demands for a car, a refrigerator, a certain amount of cash, gold karay for the MIL, etc. aren't met.
