Not helps, it's really a necessity. If you don't have a mechanic friend with you to go over the car, you could end up paying a lot of money for a car which is a pile of crap. My dad used to go to auctions and buy cars for $500 or less, which had one serious problem but otherwise were fine. Of course, he's a mechanic so he can fix it. One time my Aunt bought a car at auction in her own, without my dad or grandpa, and the car had sooo many things wrong with it. She bought it because it looked "pretty".
