It's a large, heavy, V-10 powered sedan that screams from 0-60 in 4 seconds & change. I'd say that fits the qualifications for "guy car."
Also, M5 isn't just a 5 series. It's an "M" car (whole different engineering team within BMW). M cars are the epitome of masculinity. The M5 specifically is equipped with a 500 hp/383 tq V10 engine and after SMG was phased out, wasn't available with anything but a traditional stick shift (it's now available with the M DCT, which replaces the old SMG).
Even the interiors of the M cars, with their thick steering wheels (too thick for small hands and accompanied by heavy steering feel), M pedals & leather M shifter scream "this is a MAN'S car."
The highest end 5 - the 550i - is also a 'guy car.' So is the 335i - most women will generally opt for the 328, since they have no need for the additional 70 horses or any desire to modify their car for performance.
Where is a 3 series BMW common as a first car? Beverly Hills? First BMW, maybe..

Never really noticed that before. But I don't have a problem with that per se.. Audis are very aesthetically pleasing vehicles -
S5
R8
RS6
But the GT coupe does blow the Quattroporte out of the water. It has to be one of the best looking cars I've ever seen.
