I'm not sure. I'm not far into the book, and I've never seen the movie. I have no intention of seeing the movie either. What I heard is that the movie takes place in a single dimension of Pullman's world, but the book occurs in more than one dimension.

It's safe to assume that if you try something like this in a book-to-movie adaptation, something is going to be lost.
