That doesn't mean that someone driving old car A will get fatter than someone driving new car B. More people driving now has nothing to do with cars being more efficient.
Further, I'd say more people probably seek alternate forms of transport now than they did prior to the 1970s oil crisis. There are just more cars now because there are more people.
