1) my legs aren't stragith. My parents could easily have fixed this with a very minor surgery when I was 10-11, or put me in leg braces for a while, but a lot happened when I was 10-11, and I think my parents were more concerned with their divorce than with me. About that same time, I broke a bone in my foot too, and they didn't take me to the doctor for that for a whole month. By the time I saw the doctor for the broken bone, it had healed badly.

2) The groove where my kneecap attaches to the femur is shallow to non-existant. That means that my kneecap doesn't track properly when I bed my knee.

3) I'm hyperflexible. All my joints are too flexible, including my spine. While that means I can do cool things like bend backwards until my lower back is about 90 degrees, it also means I hyperextend my knees naturally.

According to the MRI and the orthopedic surgeon I saw in Idaho, the combination of 1, 2, and 3 made my knees wear out super early. The underside of my kneecaps are damaged, so it hurts when I do anything. I can't say my prayers in the "normal" way, I have to sit. Things like that.

What's strange is that the whole thing started very suddenly. Last May my husband and I performed Umrah. That is very physical. YOu are walking constantly, praying a lot, actually performing Umrah, doing ziyarat. In our hotel the elevator didn't work to the first floor, so I was going up and down stairs several times a day. No problem. No pain. I came home and no problem either. About a month after comming home, in the span of a week I developed this debilitating pain in my left knee particularly, but also my right knee, that basically imobilized me. I couldn't bend my knees, couldn't stand, couldn't walk. So, I don't know.

My current Physical Therapist is also a little confused becuase she thinks that the combination of 1,2, and 3 shouldn't give me the amount of pain and disability I have right now. I don't know. I have better insurance now, so maybe they will be more thorough about seeing what the problem is. Who can tell.

In the meantime I had to change my whole life around.
InshAllah May Allah SWT give you Sabr
