I think the word itself, actually means one thing penetrating another, or one thing becoming entwined with another, so it can mean the physical relationship between a man and a woman, but more commonly it's used to refer to the contract between a man and woman in an Islamic ceremony of marriage.
Shaadi is the Urdu/Hindi for "wedding". So one would have a "nikah" at their "shaadi", just as one would "read their vows" at the "wedding".
